Described herein are systems and methods for the simulation of the upper airway of a subject. One embodiments provides a method (100) including the initial step (101) of receiving one or more tomographic images of the subject. At step (102) a three dimensional geometric model of the upper airway is generated from the one or more tomographic images. The geometric model includes a network of interconnected deformable mesh elements collectively defining a fluid domain (310) and a solid domain (320). The solid domain (320) defining a single unitary model of the entire upper airway region segmented into a plurality of predefined geometric regions, each being defined by one or more common anatomical parameters. At step (103), a computer simulation is performed on the geometric model to simulate behaviour of the upper airway when the subject is positioned in a predefined position. The computer simulation includes (103a) performing a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis on the fluid domain and then (103b) performing a Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis between the fluid and solid domains under the influence of an applied gravity effect. Finally, at step (104), subject-specific parameters are output which are indicative of the behaviour of the upper airway.

L'invention concerne des systèmes et des procédés permettant de simuler les voies aériennes supérieures d'un patient. Un mode de réalisation concerne un procédé (100) dont l'étape initiale (101) consiste à recevoir une ou plusieurs images tomographiques du sujet. À l'étape (102), un modèle géométrique tridimensionnel des voies aériennes supérieures est généré à partir de la ou des images tomographiques. Le modèle géométrique comprend un réseau d'éléments maillés déformables interconnectés définissant collectivement un domaine des fluides (310) et un domaine des solides (320). Le domaine des solides (320) définit un modèle unitaire unique de la région entière des voies aériennes supérieures segmentée en une pluralité de régions géométriques prédéfinies dont chacune est définie par un ou plusieurs paramètres anatomiques communs. À l'étape (103), une simulation informatique est effectuée sur le modèle géométrique pour simuler le comportement des voies aériennes supérieures lorsque le sujet se trouve dans une position prédéfinie. La simulation informatique comprend (103a) la réalisation d'une analyse de la dynamique computationnelle des fluides (CFD) sur le domaine des fluides puis (103b) la réalisation d'une analyse d'interaction structure-fluide (FSI) entre les domaines des fluides et des solides sous l'influence d'un effet de gravité appliqué. Enfin, à l'étape (104), des paramètres spécifiques à un sujet sont délivrés en sortie, qui indiquent le comportement des voies aériennes supérieures.
